Election results: public power and ID

Yesterday was election day. Here in IC, the big issue was whether or not the city should start up a public power utility. Proponents of the ordinance felt that it would result in lower electic rates for IC, but the current power company and its employees thought otherwise. The ordinance didn't pass. I wasn't really sure what to vote, and I didn't have a strong opinion on the issue, but I ended up voting no in the end. I've been happy with the electric service while living here, and the rates seem reasonable to me.

Also yesterday, the all eight members of the Dover, PA school board who supported teaching intelligent design in high school biology classes failed to get reelected. This is good for Dover, but unfortunately, the state of Kansas is now requiring ID to be taught in schools. From the article:

Science teachers will now be required to instruct their students that evolutionary theory is not proven, and will have to add that life is in fact so complex, it could not have arisen without the involvement of some external agent, or higher power. ... Board chairman Steve Abrams told Reuters: "This is a great day for education."

And here's a choice quote from this article:

In addition, the board rewrote the definition of science, so that it is no longer limited to the search for natural explanations of phenomena.

This is a sad day for education.
